With the increasing popularity and demand for Whippet puppies around the world, it isn’t hard to find breeders in lots of different countries. There are many responsible and conscientious Whippet breeders, as well as those who are just looking to make some quick cash off a litter. As lovers of this very special breed, our goal is to educate prospective families about purpose-bred Whippets and the importance of responsible breeding.

What defines a Responsible Whippet Breeder?

Responsible breeders do not breed for “popular” colors. They health test their dogs and do not let their puppies end up in shelters. They offer lifetime support to their puppy owners and genuinely care about the welfare of their dogs.

What are some important questions to ask a Whippet breeder?

  1. Are the parents registered with the country’s kennel club and health tested? If the answer is yes, you can ask for copies of the OFA documentation. If the answer is no, proceed with caution.
  2. What types of handling or early socialization / training do you do with your puppies?
  3. Where are the puppies raised? Am I allowed to visit the litter after they have received age appropriate vaccinations and deworming?

Other factors to consider are whether or not the breeder is a member of your country’s breed parent club, if you have the option to meet the mother of the litter (although it’s great if you can see both the sire and dam), if there is a spay / neuter agreement in place for companion homes, and what will happen if the new owner (you) is not able to keep the puppy (or adult) down the road.

If you already own a Whippet, what has your experience been when purchasing from a breeder? We’d love to hear your thoughts!
