Why is health testing important?

Responsible breeders will follow health testing recommendations that are recommended for their breed prior to breeding their dogs. While health testing is not a guarantee that there will never be any kind of health issue, it allows Whippet owners to make the most informed decision when they are purchasing a Whippet puppy. The primary health test recommendations for Whippets are Echocardiogram (heart), BAER (hearing), and ACVO (eyes) by O.F.A. Board Certified veterinarians. The photo below is an example of imaging done on a healthy Whippet heart taken during an Echocardiogram exam.

Is O.F.A. testing the same as Embark?
No, O.F.A. testing is very different from Embark genetic testing. Embark is a helpful tool using your dog’s dna, but it is not the same type of testing that a Board Certified veterinarian would offer and it is not a substitute for O.F.A. testing.

How do I find an Board Certified Vet?
You can ask your regular vet for a referral or look up specialty hospitals that offer O.F.A. testing. You can also find clinics in your state that are offered throughout the year by Board Certified vets. The O.F.A. website also lists upcoming clinics.

What is the appropriate age for testing?
Unless there are symptoms, it is a good idea to start testing for your Whippet around 2.5 years old. Have you tested your Whippet before? What was your experience like?
